For keaping Shoos black [illegible] Take halph a pd: of bees wax & quarter of a pd: of clarified sheep suet & ounce of lampe black one penny worth of gum arabeek put in ye lamp black ye fat & wax being matted let yn boyl well to gather & when you take it of ye fire put in ye gumb whic[k] must first be desolved in warm water make it into bals & so reserve it for use [illegible] -- -- -- -- -- -- -- Prob[ahim est a me]; G: Spencer [strikeout] [struck: G Spencer] 1773
