Commentary on anthology

• "Of the eight plays and two excerpts from plays in this collection, seven are from the present decade [1990-94] and only three from the 1980s (1986, 1989, 1989). In addition to established playwrights like Adrienne Kennedy and Ntozake Shange, Mahone presents such exciting newcomers as Kia Carthron, Suzan-Lori Parks, and Danitra Vance. In addition to a general introduction, Mahone provides detailed introductory material for each selection, including an interview with each playwright based on a uniform set of questions. Although no woman playwright has as yet reached the level of Morrison in fiction or Dove in poetry, talent is abundant and the future is promising" (Kinnamon 1997: 477).
