Commentary on anthology
-
• "An anthology of black American writers (poets, dramatists, novelists, essayists and some short story writers) from Phillis Wheatley to Don L. Lee and Ishmael Reed. At the end of each bio-bibliographical sketch, Ford gives a selected list [of] primary and/or secondary readings" (Rowell 1972: 35).
• Not exclusively literary in its focus: it offers "selections from forty-three authors arranged chronologically under the following rubrics: The Pathfinders, The Torchbearers, The Alienated, and The Revolutionists. Study aids follow each of the four sections. The bibliography is not extensive" (Kinnamon 1997: 463).
