About the anthology

• Includes 77 poems by 34 poets (17 women and 17 men)
• Includes a brief biographical note on each of the poets included in the anthology, as well as a two-page preface by the editor
• Apart from the editor (who was 62 in 1970), the poets range in age from 14 to 30 years of age
• Most of the contents have not been published previously: the exceptions are: David Llorens, "A Resonant Silence" (from "Negro Digest"); Linwood D. Smith, "Free Wine on Communion Day" (from "68 Poets" Prairie Press); the four poems by Nikki Giovanni (all from "Black Judgement"); and the two poems by Carolyn M. Rodgers (from "Songs of a Blackbird").
