Commentary on anthology

• "Brawley’s work is especially valuable for his commentary on the Negro writers of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. He approaches his criticism with few illusions beyond those which are present in all of his criticism of literature, and he frankly confesses to the reader that the literature which he includes requires the broadest and most sympathetic standards to be worthy of the name" (John S. Lash. "The Anthologist and the Negro Author." "Phylon" 8.1 [1947]: 68-76, at 74).
• "Although this book does not contain a formal bibliography, it lists works by and about black writers (where possible) in the biographical essays on each of the twenty early black American writers—from Jupiter Hammon, the first black writer to appear in print in the United States (1760) to Frances E. W. Harper and Alexander Crummell" (Rowell 1972: 31).
• The volume collected "twenty authors, many of them otherwise inaccessible, from Hammon, Wheatley, and Equiano through the Civil War. The general introduction and the headnotes are substantial" (Kinnamon 1997: 466).
